Behaviour & Body Language
Most of these behaviours are early signals worth reading. Several are covered in depth in Signs of a Stressed Betta.
Breeding bars: Vertical pale bars that appear across a female betta’s body when she’s ready to breed. They’re easy to confuse with the horizontal “stress stripes” but the direction is the tell: vertical for breeding, horizontal for stress.
Bubble nest: A raft of saliva-coated air bubbles that a male betta builds at the water’s surface to hold eggs. It’s a sign of a mature, comfortable male, but its absence isn’t a red flag. Plenty of healthy males never build one.
Clamped fins: Fins held tight against the body instead of open and flowing. Clamped fins are a general sign of stress or illness, often one of the first things you’ll notice before a specific disease becomes visible.
Fin biting (tail biting): Self-inflicted damage where a betta bites chunks out of its own fins, leaving clean, sudden gaps. Fin biting is distinct from fin rot (which recedes gradually and looks ragged or dark-edged) and is usually linked to boredom, stress, or the weight of very long finnage.
Flaring: The display where a betta puffs out its gill covers and spreads its fins to look as large and threatening as possible. Flaring is normal territorial behaviour and a little of it is healthy exercise; constant flaring at a reflection or neighbour is a stressor.
Flashing: When a fish rubs or darts against gravel, décor, or plants to relieve skin irritation. Flashing is one of the most reliable early warnings of an external parasite such as velvet or ich, often appearing before any spots are visible.
Gasping (laboured breathing): Rapid, effortful breathing, often held at the surface gulping air. The odd trip up for air is normal for a labyrinth breather, but constant gasping points to a problem like low oxygen, ammonia in the water, or parasites clogging the gills.
Glass surfing (glass dancing): Repetitive up-and-down swimming along the tank walls. Glass surfing usually points to boredom, stress, an uncycled or too-small tank, or a reaction to its own reflection.
Resting (betta “sleeping”): Bettas rest on a leaf, the substrate, or wedged into décor, often losing a little colour as they do. It alarms new keepers but is usually normal, especially at night; only worry if it comes with other symptoms like clamped fins or gasping.
Sparring: Short, supervised sessions of flaring between two bettas (through a divider) or against a mirror, used as enrichment. Sparring should last only a minute or two; prolonged sparring becomes a source of stress.
Stress stripes: Horizontal dark stripes running the length of the body that many keepers read as a sign of stress or poor conditions. This is widely observed keeper knowledge rather than a lab-confirmed rule, and it’s different from the vertical “breeding bars” a receptive female shows.
Health & Disease
Ammonia poisoning (ammonia burn): Illness caused by ammonia in the water chemically burning a fish’s gills and skin, showing as red or inflamed gills, gasping, and lethargy. It’s a water-quality emergency, not a contagious disease.
Columnaris (cotton wool disease / mouth “fungus”): A fast-moving bacterial infection that produces white or greyish cottony patches, often around the mouth, and can kill within days. It needs antibacterial treatment, not antifungal.
Constipation (bloating): Digestive backup, common in bettas fed too much dry food, causing a swollen belly and sometimes buoyancy trouble. It’s a frequent (and often harmless) cause of the symptoms people mistake for swim bladder disease.
Dropsy: Not a disease itself but a symptom: fluid builds up inside the fish until the belly swells and the scales lift outward like a pinecone. Dropsy usually signals internal organ failure and carries a poor prognosis, though early supportive care sometimes helps.
Fin rot: A common bacterial condition, usually opportunistic and driven by poor water quality or stress, that eats away at the fins, leaving ragged, receding, or dark-edged edges. Full guide: Fin Rot in Betta Fish.
Fungal infection (true fungus): Genuine fungal growths, usually Saprolegnia, that appear as fluffy, white, cotton-wool tufts on damaged skin or dead eggs. True fungus is slower and fluffier than columnaris and is treated with an antifungal medication.
Hospital tank: A separate, usually bare-bottom tank used to treat a sick fish or dose medication away from the main display. It keeps medication away from your biological filter and any invertebrates, which many treatments can harm.
Ich (white spot): A parasitic disease caused by the ciliate Ichthyophthirius multifiliis that shows up as distinct, raised white spots, like grains of salt, across the body and fins. Full guide: Ich in Betta Fish.
Popeye: Swelling of one or both eyes (exophthalmia), caused by injury or by infection linked to poor water quality. One eye usually points to an injury; both eyes usually point to a water-quality or systemic problem.
Quarantine: Isolating any new or sick fish in a separate tank, ideally for 30 days, before adding it to an established tank. The wait is long enough to catch diseases with dormant stages before they reach your other fish.
Swim bladder disease (SBD): A cluster of buoyancy problems where a betta floats, sinks, or swims tilted or sideways. SBD is often not a true disease but a knock-on effect of constipation, overfeeding, or genetics in heavily-bred body shapes.
Velvet: A highly contagious parasitic disease caused by Piscinoodinium, a dinoflagellate that coats the skin and gills in a fine gold or rust-coloured dust. It’s harder to spot than ich and especially deadly to fry. Full guide: Velvet in Betta Fish.
Treatments & Medications
Reach for the right tool, and only when you need it. Several of these are toxic to invertebrates or hard on your biological filter, so most are best used in a hospital tank.
Antibacterial / antibiotic medication: Medications (such as kanamycin or erythromycin) that treat bacterial diseases like fin rot, columnaris, and popeye. They can wipe out the beneficial bacteria in your filter, so they’re normally dosed in a hospital tank.
Aquarium salt: Sodium chloride sold for freshwater tanks (not marine or table salt), used as a mild treatment and general tonic. It helps with some conditions but does nothing for others, so treat it as a supportive tool, not a cure-all.
Copper-based medication: The standard treatment for velvet and several other parasites, sold as Coppersafe, Cupramine, and similar. Copper is highly toxic to snails and shrimp, so it must never go into a tank holding invertebrates.
Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate): A different salt from aquarium salt, used mainly as a muscle relaxant to ease constipation, bloating, and the swelling of dropsy. Aquarium salt and Epsom salt are not interchangeable.
Methylene blue: A blue dye used to treat some fungal and parasitic problems and to protect eggs from fungus. It stains silicone, décor, and skin, and harms beneficial bacteria, so it belongs in a hospital tank or a dip, not the display.
Tea-tree medications (Bettafix / Melafix): Mild melaleuca-based remedies marketed for fin and wound repair. Many keepers use them cautiously or skip them for bettas, since the oily film they leave on the surface is thought to interfere with labyrinth breathing. If you use them, dose conservatively and keep the surface accessible.
Water Chemistry & Cycling
The single biggest lever on betta health is stable, cycled water. The mechanics of the terms below are covered in How to Cycle Your Betta Tank.
Acclimation (temperature acclimation): Slowly introducing a new fish to your tank’s temperature and water rather than dropping it straight in. Sudden changes shock a fish, so it’s a standard step whenever you move a betta to new water.
Ammonia: The first and most toxic waste compound in the aquarium, produced by fish waste, uneaten food, and decay. Ammonia burns gills and skin even at low levels; in a cycled tank, beneficial bacteria keep it at zero.
Beneficial bacteria: The colonies of nitrifying bacteria that live in your filter and substrate and drive the nitrogen cycle by converting ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. These bacteria are the actual “filter” doing the work, not the sponge itself.
Bottled bacteria (starter culture): Commercial products (such as Seachem Stability or Tetra SafeStart) that add live nitrifying bacteria to kick-start or prop up a cycle. They can speed things along but don’t reliably replace testing and patience.
Cycling: The process of growing enough beneficial bacteria to handle your tank’s waste before (fishless cycling) or while (fish-in cycling) fish live in it. A “cycled” tank reads zero ammonia and zero nitrite.
GH / KH (general and carbonate hardness): GH measures dissolved minerals (how “hard” the water is); KH measures carbonate buffering, which keeps pH stable. Low KH lets pH swing quickly, which stresses fish more than a steady, less-than-ideal number would.
Liquid test kit: A set of reagent-and-test-tube tests (the API Master Kit is the common one) for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. Liquid kits are far more accurate than paper test strips and are the only reliable way to know your tank is cycled and safe.
New tank syndrome: The dangerous ammonia and nitrite spikes that hit a brand-new, uncycled tank as waste accumulates faster than bacteria can process it. It’s the most common reason beginner bettas get sick in their first few weeks.
Nitrate: The end product of the nitrogen cycle, far less toxic than ammonia or nitrite but harmful as it accumulates. Nitrate is removed by routine water changes rather than by bacteria.
Nitrite: The second waste compound in the nitrogen cycle, produced when bacteria break down ammonia. Nitrite is still highly toxic (it interferes with a fish’s ability to carry oxygen) and should read zero in a cycled tank.
Nitrogen cycle: The biological process in which beneficial bacteria convert toxic ammonia into nitrite and then into much-less-toxic nitrate. Establishing this cycle is the foundation of a safe tank.
pH: A measure of how acidic or alkaline the water is. Bettas tolerate a range of pH values well; stabilitymatters far more than hitting a specific target, so chasing a “perfect” pH with additives usually causes more harm than good.
Seeding (a new tank): Jump-starting a new tank’s cycle by moving filter media, substrate, or a sponge from an already-cycled tank, which brings live beneficial bacteria with it. Seeding is the fastest safe way to get a new tank cycled.
Water change: Removing a portion of tank water and replacing it with fresh, conditioned water to dilute nitrate and replenish minerals. Regular partial water changes are the single most important maintenance habit. Full guide: Betta Tank Cleaning & Water Changes.
Water conditioner (dechlorinator): A treatment that neutralises the chlorine and chloramine in tap water, which are harmless to people but toxic to fish and to your beneficial bacteria. Always condition new water before it touches the tank.
Anatomy & Biology
Beard (opercular membrane): The dark membrane tucked beneath a betta’s gill covers that unfolds and juts out when it flares. A big, dark beard is part of the threat display, and males show far larger beards than females.
Betta splendens: The scientific name for the Siamese fighting fish, the species almost everyone means by “betta.” Other Betta species exist (such as Betta imbellis and wild types), but B. splendens is the fancy, long-finned fish sold in stores.
Egg spot (ovipositor): A small white dot near the belly of a female betta, the tip of the tube through which she releases eggs. It’s the most reliable visible way to sex a betta, though it isn’t foolproof.
Fins (caudal, dorsal, anal, ventral, pectoral): The named fins you’ll see referenced in care and disease guides: the caudal (tail), dorsal (top), anal (underside), ventral or pelvic (the pair beneath the head), and pectoral (the small side “paddles”). Tail-type names like halfmoon and crowntail describe the caudal fin.
Gills: The organs behind the gill covers that extract oxygen from water. Gills are the danger zone in parasite infections: a heavy velvet or ich load on the gills can suffocate a fish that still looks fine on the outside.
Labyrinth organ: A specialised accessory breathing organ, located above the gills, that lets bettas gulp and use atmospheric air from the surface. The labyrinth organ is why a betta can survive in low-oxygen water, but it’s also why they need access to the surface and are not truly suited to tiny, lidless bowls.
Operculum (gill cover): The bony flap covering each gill, which a betta flexes outward when it flares to look bigger. Flaring the operculum, with the beard fanned beneath it, is what creates that classic puffed-up silhouette.
Wild-type betta: Bettas as they look in the wild, or true wild Betta species: short-finned, muted red-brown and green, and far less exaggerated than store-bought fish. Wild-types (and relatives like Betta imbellis) tend to be hardier but plainer, and some wild species are mouthbrooders rather than bubble-nesters.
Tank & Equipment

Air pump: A small pump that pushes air through tubing to run a sponge filter or an air stone. Bettas don’t need extra aeration to breathe (they gulp air at the surface), but an air pump is what powers the gentle sponge filters that suit them.
Betta hammock (leaf hammock): A suction-cup leaf (silk or natural) placed near the surface for a betta to rest on. Bettas naturally lounge on leaves, and a hammock near the top saves them repeated trips up for air.
Driftwood: Aquarium-safe wood used for aquascaping that leaches tannins, softening and tinting the water much like Indian almond leaves. It also gives bettas cover and resting spots.
Filter baffle: Anything used to soften a filter’s output flow, from a commercial attachment to a DIY sponge or water-bottle deflector. Bettas are weak swimmers with heavy fins and struggle in strong current, so baffling the flow reduces stress and exhaustion.
Gravel vacuum (siphon): A tube-and-siphon tool that drains water while pulling waste and debris out of the substrate during a water change. It’s the main tool behind the routine cleaning that keeps nitrate and gunk down.
Heater: An aquarium heater that holds the water in a betta’s tropical range (about 24–27°C / 76–80°F). Bettas are tropical fish; unheated “room temperature” tanks leave them sluggish and prone to illness.
Indian almond leaf (IAL / catappa): A dried leaf from the Terminalia catappa tree that releases tannins into the water, gently lowering pH and offering mild antibacterial and antifungal benefits. IAL is a popular natural aid for fin health and recovery.
Lid (cover): A hood or lid over the tank. Bettas are surprisingly capable jumpers, so a lid with a small surface gap left for air is a genuine safety essential, not an optional extra.
Live, silk & plastic plants: Plants that give a betta cover and security. The material matters: stiff plastic plants can snag and tear their delicate fins, so live or soft silk plants are the safer pick.
Sponge filter: An air-driven filter that pulls water through a sponge, providing gentle flow and a large surface for beneficial bacteria. Sponge filters are a favourite for bettas precisely because they filter well without creating a strong current.
Substrate: The material on the tank bottom, usually gravel, sand, or planted-tank soil. Beyond looks, it hosts beneficial bacteria and anchors live plants.
Tannins (blackwater): The tea-coloured compounds released by botanicals such as Indian almond leaves and driftwood. Tannins tint the water (“blackwater”), slightly soften and acidify it, and mimic the still, leaf-littered waters bettas come from.
Thermometer: A stick-on, floating, or digital gauge for the water temperature. Pair it with your heater and don’t trust the heater’s own dial; a cheap thermometer is how you catch a heater that has failed or stuck on.
Food & Feeding
Bettas are carnivores, and diet drives colour, energy, and digestion. Full guide: What to Feed a Betta Fish.
Betta pellets: Formulated dry food made specifically for bettas’ carnivorous, protein-heavy diet, used as the everyday staple. Quality varies widely; the first ingredient should be whole fish or a named protein, not fillers.
Bloodworms: The larvae of midge flies, a protein-rich favourite fed frozen, live, or freeze-dried. Bloodworms are a treat rather than a staple; too many can cause constipation.
Brine shrimp: Small saltwater crustaceans fed frozen or live as a treat, and hatched as “baby brine shrimp” (BBS) to feed fry.
Daphnia: Tiny freshwater crustaceans (“water fleas”) fed live or frozen. Daphnia act as a gentle natural laxative, which makes them useful for a constipated or bloated betta.
Freeze-dried food: Foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp dried for shelf life. Handy, but they can swell inside the fish and add to constipation, so many keepers soak them first and treat them as an occasional food.
Infusoria: A catch-all name for the microscopic organisms used as a first food for newly hatched fry too small even for baby brine shrimp.
Live food: Living prey like brine shrimp, daphnia, blackworms, or mosquito larvae that triggers a betta’s natural hunting drive. Nutritious and enriching, but source it carefully, as wild-caught live food can carry parasites.
Overfeeding: Giving more food than a betta needs, the single most common beginner mistake. Excess food bloats the fish and rots in the tank, spiking ammonia; a betta’s stomach is roughly the size of its eye, so a couple of pellets is plenty.
Types, Tails & Colours
These names describe a betta’s fins, body, and colour genetics, not different species; nearly all are Betta splendens.
Butterfly: A colour pattern rather than a tail type, where a solid body colour meets a clean band of clear or white toward the fin edges, like a butterfly’s wing. It can show up on many different tail types.
Crowntail: A tail type where the webbing between the fin rays is dramatically reduced, leaving spiky, comb-like extensions. Its striking look is popular, but the long finnage can be prone to tearing and biting.
Delta / Super Delta: Tail types with a triangular caudal fin that spreads wider than a veiltail but stops short of the halfmoon’s full 180 degrees (a super delta comes close).
Double tail: A genetic variety with two distinct caudal-fin lobes and, usually, a broader dorsal fin. The trait is linked to a shorter body, which can predispose these fish to swim bladder issues.
Dragon scale: A betta with thick, metallic, overlapping scales that look armoured. The prized look has a downside: overgrown scaling can creep over the eyes and cause vision problems (sometimes called “diamond eye”).
Dumbo (elephant ear): A betta with oversized pectoral fins that fan out like an elephant’s ears, a trait that can appear alongside various tail types.
Halfmoon: A tail type whose caudal fin opens to a full 180-degree half-circle, forming a clean “D” shape when flared. It’s a show-standard form; the heavy tail takes more energy to carry and can tear.
Iridescence (structural colour): The shifting blue, green, and steel sheen on many bettas, produced by light bouncing off crystal-like cells (iridophores) rather than by pigment. It’s why the same fish can look a different colour depending on the light and angle.
King betta: A retail label for unusually large, short-finned bettas, generally oversized plakat-type B. splendens rather than a separate species. “King” and “giant” are marketing terms, so care is the same as for any betta.
Koi betta: A marbled plakat patterned in red, black, white, and orange patches that resemble koi carp. Because it carries the marble gene, the pattern often shifts over the fish’s life.
Marble gene: A “jumping gene” (transposon) that causes a betta’s colouring to shift, blotch, and change over its lifetime. The marble gene is why some bettas look like a different fish months after you bought them.
Plakat: A short-finned tail type that most resembles the wild and traditional fighting form of the betta. Plakats are hardier swimmers with far less fin to damage, which many keepers prefer.
Rosetail (feathertail): An extreme halfmoon with so much extra tail webbing that it ruffles like rose petals. The look is heavily overbred and comes with real costs, including fin tearing, tail biting, and swim bladder trouble, which makes the form controversial.
Veiltail: The most common tail type, with a long, flowing caudal fin that droops downward asymmetrically. Veiltails are the classic pet-store betta and, despite their popularity, aren’t accepted in most competitive show standards.
Community & Breeding

Conditioning: Feeding a breeding pair rich, varied food (often live) for a week or two to bring them into peak spawning shape. Conditioning is the standard first step before any deliberate spawn.
Divider: A perforated partition that splits a tank so two fish can share it without physical contact, letting water and sight lines through. Dividers are used both for short sparring sessions and to hold a breeding pair apart before spawning.
Fry: Baby fish, from newly hatched through the juvenile stage. Betta fry are tiny and delicate, need infusoria or baby brine shrimp, and are far more vulnerable to disease (velvet especially) than adults.
Mouthbrooder: A betta that broods its eggs and fry inside the male’s mouth instead of in a bubble nest. Betta splendens is a bubble-nester, but many wild Betta species are mouthbrooders.
Sorority: A group of female bettas kept together in one tank. Sororities are an advanced, genuinely risky setup that needs a large, heavily planted tank and a group of the right size; they frequently fail, so they’re not a beginner project.
Spawn (spawning): A betta breeding event: the male wraps the female to fertilise her eggs, then gathers them into his bubble nest and guards them. “Spawn” also refers to the resulting batch of eggs or fry.
Tank mates: The other fish or invertebrates kept alongside a betta. Whether a betta tolerates tank mates depends on the individual’s temperament, the species chosen, and having enough space; many bettas do best alone.
