Question 1

How do I tell if my aquarium filter is too strong?

Accepted Answer

Watch your fish. If it gets pushed off course when swimming across the tank, avoids the filter’s side, or stays in one spot all day, the flow is too strong. There’s no number on the filter’s specs that can tell you this, since ratings show filtering capacity, not the strength of the current.

Question 2

How do you slow down a filter for a betta?

Accepted Answer

If your filter has a flow dial, turn it down. Then baffle the outflow using a curved piece of clean plastic bottle under the waterfall, a block of aquarium sponge over the lip, or tall plants under the outflow. Adding a pre-filter sponge on the intake also helps and protects fins from suction. Try to create a rippling surface with at least one calm area.

Question 3

Can a filter be too powerful for a fish tank?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a filter can be too powerful even if it’s working as designed. The issue isn’t “too much cleaning,” but the strong current the return flow creates. This is especially important for slow, long-finned, calm-water fish like bettas. Fish-health literature warns that heavy filtration can actually harm their health and welfare.²

Question 4

Do betta fish need a filter at all?

Accepted Answer

Bettas need clean water, and a filter is the easiest way to provide it. You can keep them with less filtration if you do frequent water changes,² and one care author even says you don’t need a filter for a healthy betta if you’re willing to do the extra work.⁵ For most people, it’s best to keep a gentle filter running, since the alternative is a strict water-change schedule with no backup, and a biological filter takes 40 to 60 days to get established once you add one.⁴

Question 5

Do bettas need some current for exercise?

Accepted Answer

There’s no evidence that bettas need current for exercise. All the research I could track down shows they prefer calm water,² and what makes them swim more is having space and things to explore, not being pushed by the current.³ Circulation in a betta tank is mainly for the filter and gas exchange.

Question 6

Do plakats handle current better than halfmoon or veiltail bettas?

Accepted Answer

It’s possible, but there’s no data to prove it. Welfare researchers say there’s no evidence that fancy fins make it harder for bettas to swim,⁴ and the idea comes from breeders who believe heavy fins are a strain.⁵ No matter what kind of fins your fish has, set up the tank to be calm.
