Question 1

Can my betta live without a filter?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but only if you take over everything the filter would do. That means using a real tank instead of a bowl, doing several partial water changes every week, and testing for ammonia on a schedule. What a betta can't handle is when "no filter" really means "no plan" for keeping the water safe. For your first betta, it's usually better to use a filter. The routine a filter gives you is the one most beginners actually stick with.

Question 2

How long can a betta live without a filter?

Accepted Answer

There isn't a set number of days or weeks, no matter what you might read online. If you keep up with water changes in an unfiltered tank, your betta can live a normal lifespan. If you skip water changes, ammonia builds up in the water. Ammonia is a waste product that's toxic to fish, and no one has measured exactly how long a betta can survive in those conditions. The real answer is that your betta can live without a filter as long as you keep doing everything the filter would do.

Question 3

Can a betta live in a bowl without a filter?

Accepted Answer

That’s really two questions at once. The filter part is about ammonia, which is the waste that builds up in the water. Everything above still applies. The bowl part is about how much water and space your betta has. The less water you have, the faster waste builds up, so a bowl means you have to do water changes even more often, and your fish has less room to swim.⁷ If you look at each question on its own, the bowl makes things harder both ways.

Question 4

Do bettas need a heater too?

Accepted Answer

In most homes, yes. Bettas are tropical fish, which means they need warm water. The main sign we have that a betta is comfortable is bubble nesting. Bubble nests usually show up when the water is between about 76 and 82°F, with most nests at 80°F.⁷ This range comes from a 1934 breeding study, and a welfare review extends it to pet bettas, so treat it as a target rather than a rule. A small heater keeps the water steady. Our tank setup guide explains how to pick one.

Question 5

Does a betta need an air pump or bubbler?

Accepted Answer

Not for oxygen. Bettas can survive in water with very little dissolved oxygen because they breathe air at the surface.⁷ An air stone, which is the bubbling device you see in some tanks, mostly solves a problem your betta doesn't have. The main reason to use an air pump in a betta tank is to run a sponge filter, which is about cleaning the water, not adding oxygen.

Question 6

Do live plants replace a filter?

Accepted Answer

No, but live plants do help. In one study of unfiltered betta tanks, live plants slowed down the buildup of ammonia, which is the toxic waste from fish. The tanks planted with Sagittaria held the lowest ammonia of all, but ammonia still went up in every tank over 25 days.⁶ Plant your tank heavily for better water quality, but you still need either a filter or a strict water-change routine.
